Dancer, choreographer and director of the DA.TE Danza Company. Mexico City 1964. Resident in Spain since 1994.
Omar Meza is considered one of the great international experts in the performing arts for children and youth. Dancer and choreographer with more than 40 years of experience in contemporary dance, he has directed more than 30 productions. Omar Meza is founder and director of the company DA.TE Danza de Granada (1999), producing contemporary dance, dance-theater and theater with objects for children and young audiences, ranging from early childhood to adolescence. With 27 shows premiered and more than 2,500 performances, DA.TE Danza is one of the longest running dance companies in Andalusia. In recent years Omar has focused its efforts on creation, research and work for children through various state and international associations.
Trained in classical, contemporary, folkloric and improvisational dance in Mexico, he decided to broaden his knowledge by working with the Nakbani and Corpus Companies in Guatemala, and with the Taller de Danza in Venezuela, where he later appeared as principal dancer and performer in groups such as Espacio del Alba, Ballet Metrópolis and Ballet del Espacio in Mexico City.
Over the years, Omar's artistic trajectory has taken him to different countries in Latin America and Europe, developing himself with very diverse styles and techniques, finally leading him to work in 1993 with the Neuer Tanz Company in Düsseldorf (Germany), which would mark his later evolution as a choreographer. Throughout this vital journey, he worked with different choreographers, choreographers, companies and projects that influenced his work as a creator, experimenting with different techniques and languages in dance such as: Classical dance, Graham, Limón, Cunninham, Realease, Contac, Improvisation, dance-theater, Folkwang Essen or Pina Bausch among others... From the fruit of that work, Omar is able to extract the best of each performer, keeping their essence and taking advantage of their artistic qualities by accepting their movements and limitations and integrating them within the scene.
In 1995 he creates and founds the company "Hojarasca" in Burgos (Spain), which opens the way to the development of Contemporary Dance in the Community of Castilla y León. It was at this point that Omar Meza began his stage as a stable choreographer of his own company, betting firmly on contemporary dance in Spain and founding what we know as DA.TE Danza in 1999. As a creator, Omar has directed more than 30 productions for companies such as DA.TE Danza, Toc de Retruc, La Baraca Testoni-Ragazzi (Italy), Imaginart, Higiénico Papel, Compañía Honza Pokusil (Czech Republic) and Animasur Teatro.
Omar Meza is a pioneer and the first creator in this country to produce shows for early childhood (6 months to 3 years). He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of ASSITEJ Spain (non-profit organization for the defense and development of the performing arts for children and youth). He was also the main precursor of the I International Congress of Dance for Children and Youth at World level that was held within the Festival of Music and Dance of Granada and the I National Conference of Dance for Children and Youth of ASSITEJ Spain and International. Among his new projects is the launch of the first interactive map of dance promoted by the International Network of Dance for Youth.
